How to delegate your ADA voting power

Step-by-step guide to delegating your ADA voting power to a Cardano DRep, what it costs, what it does not affect, and how to change your delegation later.

Delegating your voting power tells Cardano which DRep should vote on your behalf. It takes one transaction, costs only the network fee, and can be changed or undone at any time. Your ADA never leaves your wallet.

Before you start

  • A Cardano wallet that supports governance — Lace, Eternl, Typhon, Yoroi and Begin all do
  • A small amount of ADA for the transaction fee (typically under 0.5 ₳)
  • A DRep you want to delegate to, or a decision to abstain or vote yourself

The steps

  1. Pick a DRep. Browse the directory, read their objectives, and check their on-chain voting record against what they claim.
  2. Open their profile and choose Delegate.
  3. Connect your wallet when prompted. The site never asks for your seed phrase — no legitimate Cardano application ever will.
  4. Review the transaction. It should show a small fee and no ADA leaving your wallet beyond that fee.
  5. Sign and submit. Your delegation takes effect at the next epoch boundary.

Your other options

Delegating to a person is not the only choice, and the alternatives are real positions rather than a way of opting out.

  • Abstain — your voting power counts toward participation but never toward Yes or No. Useful if you want your stake represented as deliberately neutral.
  • No Confidence — a standing vote against the current Constitutional Committee.
  • Vote yourself — register as your own DRep and vote on every action directly.

Changing or removing your delegation

Delegation is not a commitment. Submit a new delegation transaction to switch DReps, and the change takes effect at the next epoch boundary. There is no lock-up period and no penalty, and switching costs only the network fee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to delegate voting power?
Only the Cardano network transaction fee, typically under 0.5 ADA. Delegating your voting power to a DRep carries no deposit. If you have never registered a stake address before, that registration has its own one-time 2 ADA deposit, refundable when you deregister it.
How long does DRep delegation take to activate?
Your delegation takes effect at the next epoch boundary. Cardano epochs last five days, so it activates within five days of the transaction confirming.
Can I change my DRep later?
Yes, at any time and as often as you like. Submit a new delegation transaction and it replaces the previous one at the next epoch boundary. There is no lock-up.
Do I need to move my ADA to delegate voting power?
No. Your ADA stays in your wallet throughout. The delegation transaction records your choice on-chain without transferring any funds.
