How to choose a DRep

What to look for in a Cardano DRep: voting record, participation rate, published rationale, and the warning signs worth avoiding.

There are 625 DReps with published metadata, and 542 of them have stated who they are and what they stand for. The useful thing about Cardano governance is that you do not have to take any of it on trust — every vote is on-chain, so you can check the record against the pitch.

Check that they actually vote

This is the first filter and it eliminates a lot of candidates. A DRep who never votes still absorbs the voting power delegated to them, which quietly removes your stake from every decision. Look at how many of the 155 governance actions on record they have voted on, and whether they have voted recently.

Compare stated objectives against actual votes

Every DRep publishes objectives, motivations and qualifications. Read them, then open their voting record and check whether the two match. A DRep who says they oppose large treasury withdrawals and then voted for every one of them is telling you something useful.

Look for published rationale

Some DReps attach a written rationale to each vote explaining their reasoning. This is optional, and the ones who bother are usually the ones taking the role seriously. It also gives you something concrete to disagree with, which is more useful than a vague statement of values.

Consider voting power concentration

A DRep with very large delegated voting power has more influence over outcomes, which cuts both ways: your delegation matters less at the margin, but the DRep is more consequential. Some delegators deliberately pick smaller DReps whose views closely match their own rather than adding to a large bloc.

Warning signs

  • No published metadata at all — you have no idea what you are delegating to
  • Registered long ago with zero votes cast
  • Objectives that are pure slogan with no specific positions
  • Anyone who asks for your seed phrase or for ADA to be sent to them — delegation never requires either

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best DRep to delegate to on Cardano?
There is no single best DRep — it depends on which positions you want represented. The practical test is whether a DRep votes consistently, publishes their reasoning, and has a voting record that matches their stated objectives.
How do I check a DRep’s voting record?
Every DRep profile on DRep ID lists the governance actions they voted on and how they voted, taken directly from on-chain data.
Can I delegate to more than one DRep?
No. Each stake address delegates its voting power to a single DRep at a time, though you can change that choice whenever you like.
