How to become a DRep on Cardano

How to register as a Cardano delegated representative: the deposit, the metadata you need to publish, and how to attract delegators.

Anyone can register as a DRep. There is no application, no approval, and no minimum stake — you register on-chain, publish who you are, and start voting. What separates a DRep people actually delegate to from one nobody finds is almost entirely about the metadata you publish and whether you vote consistently.

What registration requires

  • A Cardano wallet with governance support
  • A refundable deposit, returned in full when you retire as a DRep
  • A metadata document describing who you are and what you stand for
  • A place to host that document, with its hash recorded on-chain

What to publish

Your metadata is the only thing a prospective delegator has to go on before they check your voting record. The fields that matter:

  • Given name — how you want to be known. Without it, you appear as a raw bech32 identifier that nobody will click.
  • Objectives — the specific positions you intend to vote on. Be concrete; slogans do not help anyone decide.
  • Motivations — why you are doing this.
  • Qualifications — relevant background, if any.
  • References — links to your other public presences so people can verify you are who you claim.

Claim a readable DRep ID

A DRep ID token gives you a short, memorable identity you can share, instead of a 58-character bech32 string. You can change the underlying DRep credential later without losing the name.

After registration

Vote. A DRep that stops voting for a set number of epochs becomes inactive and their delegated voting power stops counting toward thresholds — which means everyone who trusted you is effectively removed from governance. Publishing a rationale with each vote is optional but it is the clearest signal that you are doing the job properly.
